In the early part of the last century, artists such as Bruno Munari, Alexander Calder, Man Ray and others were rethinking the traditional ideas of sculpture. Through the exploration of kinetic suspended constructs and their shifting forms, the element of time became an additional factor. This revolutionised the idea of sculpture from that of volumes and masses into delicate and at times ephemeral concepts.
In this project, students explored Bruno Munari’s approach in his Useless Machine sculptures to prototype, experiment and finally design and make their own mobile sculpture. They experimented with lengths, order, thickness of material, balance.
